I could honestly talk about this subject for hours! I was a pretty big gamer throughout my high school and college years. Even now there are games I go back to and have to play...
Now it may sound strange but as a woman of color it was really hard for me to find a group of people that I could connect with in my youth that I could share my "nerdy" side with. But it was through gaming that I found a group of people who I could relate to that didn't judge me for not fitting into certain stereotypes or enjoying socializing in this manner.
Video Games I Enjoyed:
Anything Mario Brothers (especially early platforms to Nintendo 64)
Hi Sharaine. My experience was very similar. I really loved playing Marathon across the network in my office with the guys that I worked with. And I also found an online Star Trek RPG that felt like family. I hope there are still some games that you love.
Oh yes. Many of these games I will go back to from time to time. Bioshock and call of duty were good examples of those. But with a lot of the online forums and such shutting down, those types of games are not as fun.

Glad you're still playing, but I'm sorry your experience isn't as good.
I love this list! My son is just now playing the N64 007 Goldeneye, and he's asking me to play it. And Super Paper Mario I need to play again.
